Seven Minutes

I was listening to Terry Gross tonight, and she interviewed Michael Moore. I didn't catch most of the interview because KCFR is having a pledge drive, but one thing I did hear was their discussion of the infamous "7 minutes" in which George W. Bush, after having been told "We are under attack" sat and listened to children read the story My Pet Goat for a full seven minutes before doing anything about it. Given the later confusion about whether the President had authorized fighter planes to shoot down the plane that would crash into the Pentagon, it appears that those seven minutes of inaction may have claimed lives.

A devastating, but completely fair, attack ad for Kerry would be to try and buy as large chunks as possible of contiguous air time and show as much of the seven minutes as possible, complete with a scary intro, ticking clock sounds during the story telling, and a scary conclusion. Kerry would, rightly, be accused of politicizing 9/11, but if the voiceover were kept to a minimum the only thing the Bush camp could protest would be the documentation of the President's own behavior — the more the Bush campaign protested the weaker he would look. There are only two weeks left until the election — something needs to be done now to decrease Bush's support among women and perhaps ward off the effects of any October Surprise.
